Stickbat Prospectus
It's now or never for head coach Pete Hughes.Oklahoma hasn't made the post season tournament since 2013 and that is kind of a thorny topic. Oklahoma is in a great hotbed of regional talent, and had made a regional ten times in the previous thirteen years prior to Hughes arrival. Oklahoma. Oklahoma isn't a baseball blue blood, but it's the tier below that. Missing the tournament for four consecutive years will be straight up acceptable.
Hughes to his credit made a huge move to secure his future in the offseason buy hiring Skip Johnson after the staff change in Texas. Johnson is one of the most respected pitching coaches in the game and the good news for Oklahoma - he had talent to work with. the raw talent is there on the mound and in the bullpen. Grove and Irvin are the bellcows, both big righthanders with good to great sliders.. I'm not overly concerned with pitching this year, outside of Grove and Irvin OU has enough serviceable arms in the bullpen. They're not going to be Jon Gray and that's okay.
I have a huge concern with our bats., I hope to be proven wrong but I see a lot of small ball in the future for OU. I would expect any power to come from catcher Martinez who did finish last year on an upswing and first baseman O'Brien.
Again credit to Hughes, he has brought in some talented freshman but at this point it's not really about the freshman or the future. Hughes has to win now, or he'll be replaced. I actually do think Oklahoma will show improvement this season, especially because I believe the Big 12 will still be soft around the middle. I don' quit think Hughes will get it done, which is unfortunate because the man does a lot for the community, but as I noted above, a slump of this nature can't be allowed with the talent surrounding Oklahoma.
